This publication explores how one mechanism responsible for the effects of ACEs—toxic stress levels—can be substantially buffered by stable and supportive relationships with caregivers. It summarizes findings from a research brief, including that ACEs disproportionately affect minority children and that economic hardship and divorce or separation of parents or guardians are the most common adversities reported nationally and in all states.
