Vitruvian Planning LLC conducted a rapid HIA on behalf of Boise, Idaho, that analyzed the potential health effects of building a new library in the Bown Crossing neighborhood. The study examined the impacts of programming or services offered at the library, with a focus on youth and older adults, and of the location selection.

Findings

The report determined that the library’s site and planned layout would be likely to benefit the health of nearby residents and patrons. The proposed location is convenient to thousands of residents, situated near three elementary schools, two high schools, two main avenues, and three residential communities. The library plans include outdoor green spaces to promote social cohesion and emotional health, and bicycle racks and pathways to encourage access through active transportation. Furthermore, the facility is projected to attract visitors to the Bown Crossing area, potentially bolstering the community’s economic health.

Recommendations

  • Use indoor and outdoor spaces for library-organized activities.
  • Conduct direct outreach efforts to engage senior community members.
  • Continually seek feedback from library patrons and nearby residents to better design programming and services that meet their needs and interests.
  • Work with local health care providers to host outreach events, clinics, or other public health interventions.
