Community Wealth Building Tools: Community Land Trusts (CLTs)

Published By
Democracy Collaborative Foundation Inc.

This toolkit focuses on Community Land Trusts (CLTs), which are nonprofit, community-based organizations designed to ensure community stewardship of land. CLTs can be used for many types of development, but tend to be used to ensure long-term housing affordability. The trust acquires and maintains ownership of the land, and prospective homeowners enter into long-term, renewable leases instead of buying it. When homeowners sell, the trust keeps most of the increased property value, which helps keep prices affordable for future lower income families. This toolkit contains an overview, support organizations, models and best practices, research resources, articles and publications, and a toolbox related to CLTs.
