In this blog, the author discusses two sides of the views on autism: the medical model calling for prevention and cure of the serious impairments that can be associated with autism, and those who support neurodiversity and see such language as a threat to autistic people’s existence, no different than eugenics. The author argues that these viewpoints are not mutually exclusive, and can be integrated by acknowledging autism contains huge heterogeneity.
