This brief introduces housing professionals and policymakers to the concept of health impact assessments (HIAs) and explains how these studies can improve decisions about projects, policies, and programs in the areas of housing and community development. It draws upon findings from a review of 40 HIA reports on housing-related programs, projects, and policy decisions conducted in the U.S. between 2002 and 2013. For each HIA reviewed, NCHH identified information such as the lead organization, the health determinants and outcomes assessed, data sources and analytic methods used, methods of stakeholder engagement, and priority recommendations.
